and the winner is…

mamayaga! congrats.

‘the songlines collection’ will be sent to you via ravelry shortly.songlines_Collage_mediumbe sure to pop into the songlines knitalong 2015 thread of ambah’s rav group.

it’s always extra fun to make something

in a happy, group of people

who love yarn

and knitting, of course,

just as much as you do, right?

and for those who didn’t win this time, check out fellow designer karen’s blog.

you can enter to win your own copy of the collection over there until the 16th.

two days ago, i picked the yarn combo

to make my own ‘yindela‘.12106105_1669841606590300_1944966418_n_medium2i have just one more deadline project to cast off

and a few loose ends to clear up,

and then i get jump into this new, fun knitting.

i’m so ready.

‘jump’ taken from 14:10 of acts.

one more chance to be heard

i am finally allowed to tell you

that the mini collection i entered in the holla knits mini competition

is ‘status of the stratus‘. but you’d already guessed that, hadn’t you?'status of the stratus' collagemine made it to the top four collections,

so now there’s more voting.

to help you make your choice (because they’re all

interesting collections by interesting indie designers),

you can click on any of the four main photos shown

to be linked to the full info for each.

also there are some

questions that the four of us answered

and detailed descriptions of the construction and yarns

that we’re each thinking about.

you can vote once a day, but for as many of the four of us as you’d like to.

that’s a fun twist, no?

so take a minute and support indie designers

by placing a vote. i did.

turn around

when i took a step back

and looked honestly at the progress of my nomadic nights slouch

i could see it was a  good idea gone sideways.

the three very differently textured yarns

that i had chosen so they would

pop individually,

blended together until the personality of each fiber was lost.

ugh. time for plan b.

i lovingly rewound the original skeins for another day,IMG_8829crop

and began again

with three

muted shades of

julie asselin’s ankara.

this is big, squishy

bulky at its

best.

still enjoying holly‘s pattern and now i’m so liking

the finished hat as well.IMG_8810crop

i guess that since

the snow

refuses to hear

my pitiful cries and stop,

that i might get quite a bit of

wear out of my new

slouch.

finalizing

winter is

not done, but i am.

i am done with winter, anyway.

therefore, today is about looking forward to spring,

even if just for a few minutes to give me enough hope to get through the rest of the cold,

you know?

growing things and happy colors and transitioning to warmer weather…

in my opinion, that all calls for a couple of new patterns.alaku and longing for springhere are ‘alaku’ (wrap on the left) and two different ways to wear ‘longing’.

can you believe that the days to wear fingerless gloves outside

(as opposed to double layers of mittens)

are maybe 6 weeks away?

i want to believe.

i really do.

myself in a yarn store

cheryl, owner of lys in the loop,

commented on facebook last week that

the look on my son’s face in the candy store on vacation

was very much like my face when the new fall (or spring) yarns arrive.

015-2cropwe took a pic this morning to see just how much of a family resemblance there is.

and she’s right.  i look almost as excited as he did.

so fun that as a grown-up something like yarn

makes me feel this good.

‘face’ taken from 6:25-26 of numbers.

yarn i’m holding is julie asselin’s sevilla.

the horizon

three days ago

i dropped my oldest off at camp.

overnight camp – for seven days for the very first time.

surely she’s making friends and having a great time.

the lake was so lovely and the people so nice, that i wanted

to grab a bunk and stay myself.  truly, i did.

her being away just makes home different.

it’s not quiet here as i’ve got 3 kids remaining of my own,

and often 3 or so from the neighborhood on any given day,

but the space filled by my oldest is oddly empty.

this puts me in a thinking mood.

i’m seeing some personal ruts i want to break out of,

some walls i want to break down,

and pondering what new adventures i want to begin…

as a small start, i have this lovely _

(in the colorway ‘confiture’)

from julie asselin.

the adventure part is that i have in mind

a shape that is new to me (although not uncommon)

and i want it to be somewhat lacy.

not this kind of lacy

(don’t get your hopes up), but lacy none-the-less.

since things feel different here this week,

i’m also revved up to try my new square needles from knitter’s pride.

IMG_5601cropi wasn’t sure how they would feel to hold in my hands,

but although they feel different,

they don’t feel square.

the wood is smooth and warm (as opposed to the chill of some metallics).

the grain is very pretty which makes my artistic side happy.

my practical side didn’t really care what they looked like one little bit,

but it’s glad that the artistic side of me isn’t griping.

i’ll need to knit a little more with them

to find the words to describe

just how they feel

‘different’.

maybe i’ll be able to explain

about the same time my sweet girl arrives home

full of stories and new outlooks and penpals galore.  can’t wait.

here it comes

…and the winner,

of enough of julie asselin’s super bulky ‘yotta’ to knit up the neckwrap

water under the sky‘, is tinerw!

IMG_4491contcongratulations!

or as my cousins said at my graduation,

snoitalutargnoc (in true cousin style, they sang it in harmony)!

and for those who almost won,

julie has plenty of

amazing colors to check out.  enjoy!

‘sang’ taken from 38:6-7 of job.

needles at the ready?

IMG_4325cropi used up

one and a half skeins

of yotta to make

water under the sky‘,

braids and all.

now i have

one and a half skeins

left to giveaway

for someone else

to enjoy.

you have from now until this saturday night

to leave a comment (which includes your rav name

or some other way for me to reach you if your name gets chosen).

IMG_4317cropi’ll draw a name this monday, the 21st.

take a look at julie’s yarns

and tell me which one

you’d most like to knit with.

you can include why if you feel so moved.

then check back monday to see the results.

ready? … set … comment …

‘water under the sky’

the summer i was fourteen years old,

i spent two weeks immersed at language camp.

IMG_4170cropthis meant only french

spoken, all the time.

the thing is,

most of us campers

knew very little french.

we’d whisper

in english

in our bunks at night

or behind

the counselors’ backs

trying to stave off

the deep feelings of homesickness

that were only intensified by the language gap.

in an effort to connect IMG_4158

(and to calm us down),

our cabin leader ingrid

would quietly sit

humming

while she brushed

our hair until it shined.

she would then

do different

braids each day.

french braids (of course),

dutch braids, pigtail braids and my favorite, fishtail braids.

four of us had long hair then and became known for our daily locks.

we loved our matching braids and we ate up the attention.

IMG_4173shadewe were so far

from home and from

our own sweet mamas.

even now,

braids

make me feel hugged.

this piece

of my history

is the inspiration

for today’s

new pattern.

‘water under the sky’ feels to me like a warm hug around the neck

and the fishtail braids are like emotional comfort food.IMG_4165sat

don’t you dare let

the braids scare you.

there are clear

step by step directions.

if you want more,

fishtail braiding

is easy to find

on youtube,

and tomorrow you can

to enter to win

enough yarn to knit and braid, your own ’emotional comfort’.

see you then…
